Dorothy M. Farr, J.W. Beatty 1869 – 1941, Agnes Etherington Art Center 1980, the canvas reproduced page 79
Through his rich use of colour, Beatty gracefully depicts the configuration of the land as the sun pours over the snow. His ability to contrast light and shadow, snow and water, bring depth and vitality to the scene while at the same time, encapsulate a certain sense of stillness on a sunny winter’s day.
In Sketch for Winter Sunshine, Bellefountain [sic], Beatty’s application of paint shows his interest in a lively and looser brush stroke, which enabled the artist to achieve a vibrancy often found in sketches that were quickly produced in natural light.
This painting is a sketch for a large oil on canvas that was stolen from the Ontario College of Art and Design’s (OCAD) permanent collection in 2007, where Beatty was a passionate teacher for many years.
